And you thought Poker on Television was bad.

Someone actually wrote a very good article about the ten worst poker hands in movie history. I was going to paste over the film clips but this is such a good article I felt it deserved a link: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/212559-the-most-ridiculous-poker-hands-in-movie-history
I wish just once we could get a movie that satisfied the director's need for drama and the realities of poker in the real world.

Review: "Busto to Robusto" a documentary series.

"Money is just a way to keep score. Just like in a video game"

You hear that quote over and over again from several of the highest stakes players in the Poker world. Some of them barely old enough to drink alcohol legally. "Busto to Robosto" is an excellent short film looking into the life of one online poker sensation and his comeback from a mental breakdown due to Bipolar Disorder. If you watch the film carefully you can see OCD hints of his coming issues way back before he started playing online. He still plays online and has over $2 million in verified winnings.

Just the first in a series this documentary was two years in the making and pulls no punches with the online crowd. Made with the cooperation of and interviews with some of the biggest "Young Guns" of online poker you get a unique perspective of how they think, why they play, and what it all means to them.
Take from it what you want.

Poker Books suck or "I read the book and lost??????"

Before the Poker Boom hit I played mostly by 'feel' and did well but the game of choice in live Poker Rooms til 2003/4 was FLHE. I got an old beat up yard sale copy of Super System when I was in college (85-89) but used it more as a how to play guide and not a system. Over the years I have probably read every book from Helmuth's stupid "Eagle, Jackal, Mouse" abortion to Harrington's set of encyclopedia's and not one of them teaches "Feel" which is of course what sets the pro level players apart from the rest of us.
I got crushed early playing online until I read Internet Texas Holdem which was the online bible back then. When online FLHE pretty much died because it was full of bots, grinders, and math players in 2006/7 I started reading about online NLHE. Specifically looking at MTT tactics I read anything by anybody. They all pretty much say the same exact things in different words. You just have to pick a book that fits your reading comprehension level. If all you want is a push shove chart you can Google that in ten seconds.
I recommend:
Beginners/Rookies:"Internet Texas Holdem" and running through the Full Tilt Poker Academy. You get the basics, won't look stupid and might win a few with luck.
Intermediate Level: "Super System" and "Harrington on Holdem" and "Poker for Advanced Players". The bibles of poker.
Expert and Specialists: Depends completely on what game you want to play but do not ever buy anything hawked by an unknown with a preface by someone who last FT'd 30 years ago.
Last thing, the pros are pros for a reason and they will not sell you their entire game for twenty bucks. You have to absorb the material and think for yourself.

Average Joe is not welcome in our Poker Room!!!!!!!!!!!! GTFO Noob.

It really irritates me when live dealers allow the regulars to get away with crap. Since the regulars pretty much keep the casinos afloat during the week lots of places let them get away with murder. I had a conversation with the Poker Room Manager of my local casino about why there are only four maybe five games regularly running when last year they always had 8-10 and three or four STTs. MTT turnouts are a quarter of what they used to be. He really wanted to know what I thought, so being me, I told him.

Things regulars get away with that tick me off:

1. Not showing when called and getting on me for slowing the game down by not showing instead.
2. Flipping one card then mucking.
3. Holding seats for an hour or more in a game with a full room and a waiting list while a regular finishes a SST.
4. Allowing regulars to talk each other through a hand (this happens alot in FLHE).
5. Not warning or penalizing regulars for abusive behavior. Average Joe thinks the Dealer should say something and has no clue he can call "FLOOR!"
6. Regulars referring to the Floor Boss by his first name and pulling the "I play here every day Jerry" card to get a questionable ruling.
7. Allowing Regulars to show up an hour or more late for tournaments without putting their stacks out to pay blinds but holding the seat with a button.
8. Allowing Regulars to "Rabbit Chase" and reach into the muck.
9. Ignoring the "Butt in Seat" rule because a regular is in the bathroom.
10. Dealers letting the regulars help chop and handle pots.
11. Poker Rooms doing things to make the "Regs" happy like adjusting MTT payouts higher so Average Joe cannot min cash and come back next week.
12. Dealers allowing "Regs" to Straddle, Make Side Bets, Last Longers and Insurance without explaining it to the poor Average Joe who is getting stiffed.

Here is a little secret about "Regulars" that casinos do not understand:

1. Waiters and Waitresses hate working the Poker Rooms because Poker Players are tight as rocks, bitch alot and are crappy tippers.
2. Regulars scare the living crap out of your average joe recreational poker player. With FLHE almost dead Average Joes are terrified to walk into a Casino anymore to play poker.
3. Regulars are all guilty of Implicit Collusion. They all know how each others play so they sit and wait for a Fish to show up and chop his stack.
4. Regulars know every angle to shoot to get a freebie, comp or hourly credit. Average Joes don't so they actually make money for the casino.
5. Tournament Directors that treat MTTs like a punishment. Driving the thing into the dirt to get it over by skipping breaks and levels. This is for the "Regs" to get back to the cash games. Average Joe's want value, play and entertainment for their buy in. Not to be herded, prodded and coerced into taking a chop.

There are lots more that I can point out over my years of poker play but these stick out right now. Poker Room Managers and Casino Directors, please and for the love of the game (and your rake) enforce the etiquette rules, professionalize the dealers, get the "Regs" in line and make your Poker Rooms "Average Joe" friendly before the all start playing Black Jack again.

This is my opinion. What do you think? Leave a comment and tell me your horror story.
